Encouraging Tween Girls to Read -- The Cupcakes Club (and Giveaway!)

There’s no doubt that today’s kids are excited about reading books! Thanks to terrific series like Harry Potter, Captain Underpants, The Wimpy Kid, Twilight and others, more and more children, tweens and teens are talking about books and lining up at the bookstores. I was always a huge reader as a kid (and still am!), so this really warms my heart. I spent hours in my room reading the Little House on the Prairie books, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle adventures, everything by Beverly Cleary, and the Narnia series. Of course, back when I was a kid, we found out about good books from our friends and the school librarian. Kids today have so many more ways to talk about books, especially on the Internet.

Donna Benson, an elementary school teacher and writer, is also excited about children’s enthusiasm for books—so much so that she created a website called The Cupcakes Club, an online book club for tween girls. It’s a safe and monitored website where young girls can talk about books, chat with the girls in The Cupcakes Club, play games, earn prizes and more! Girls can become a “cupcake” by signing up for free, or parents or grandparents can upgrade them to a V.I.C. (Very Important Cupcake) for a one-time fee of $19.95 (a $35 value). With V.I.C. status, they receive two books in the Cupcakes series, plus a free Cupcakes Club T-shirt! Any future purchases are completely optional.

And I just got news of a little secret: Starting in February 2009, they will be giving away $100 cash each month on The Cupcakes Club! Members will be given a clue and a page number to go to in one of the books. A winner will be drawn from the correct entries received to get $100! Tween girls can buy a lot of books with that!

Donna was kind enough to send me two Cupcakes Club books, Shakin’ Up Soccer, Summer Style and Dog Gone Drama, and a T-shirt (girls’ size Large) to give to one lucky reader of this blog! To enter, go to www.thecupcakesclub.com, and then come back here and leave a comment on this post giving the name of one of The Cupcakes Club girls, along with something special about her.

For optional additional entries:

2) Put a button for Susan Heim on Parenting on your blog. Post a comment with your blog’s URL.

3) Tweet this giveaway on Twitter or post it on your blog. Leave a comment with your Twitter name or a link to the post.

4) Subscribe to Susan Heim on Parenting via email, RSS or as a Follower on Blogger. Leave a comment with your subscription method.

The winner will be randomly selected on February 1, 2009!

Your tween daughter or granddaughter will love The Cupcakes Club, as well as getting to know the characters and their adventures. It’s a great way to encourage her to read fun and age-appropriate books, and to interact on a website that you’ll feel comfortable having her join.

CONTEST CLOSED. Congratulations to Terra H., who won The Cupcakes Club prize for her daughter!

  16. Thanks for letting us know about this new book series - promotions to get the books out there and being read is a great idea and a good marketing device by the publisher. I, too, remember being turned on to certain books by the children's librarian, but now there may be laws that will keep kids out of the library until ALL books are tested and removed if they have trace amounts of lead [http://www.nbc-2.com/Articles/readarticle.asp?articleid=25264&z=1] - does that seem a little extreme to anyone else? I've never thought of books as being dangerous to kids!
